Trans-Atlantic Passenger Freighter Voyages – Updates

Passenger freighters are working cargo ships, usually container ships, which carry a small number of passengers as well as freight. The limit for passengers in a freighter is twelve. If the ship carries more than twelve, she becomes a passenger ship and must carry a doctor. The average passenger load in freighters is approximately five.

Passenger freighter cabins are usually quite large and comparable to ocean view cruise ship cabins. Usually, you will find private facilities (shower and toilet) and a comfortable bed. It is common to have a sitting area and a desk as well. Cabins are usually bright with more than one window although some will have the view blocked by containers if the ship is heavily loaded. Read the information sheets for more on a view and on-board facilities.

Most ships will have a passenger lounge, small pool or fitness room and there is usually access to the bridge (varying with the captain). Passengers must be fit enough to travel in a ship without a doctor and to handle stairs to reach the dining room. Few passenger freighters have lifts or elevators.

The big advantage of passenger freighters over cruise ships and ocean liners is the lower prices for singles. Those travelling alone may pay the same fare as those travelling double occupancy. If there is a single supplement, it is much lower than the 100% commonly charged in the cruise industry.

If cruise ships are more appropriate for your needs remember The Cruise Peoplehas been handling bookings and reservation for them since 1969.  We are Canada’s original cruise agency.

Since 9/11, many travellers have avoided flying. Passenger freighters became an alternative, especially for those fit persons with flexible schedules and time to enjoy a voyage. A few years ago, we had about twenty ships sailing to Europe from Halifax, Montreal, the Great Lakes or the United States. Unfortunately, increasing security has resulted in a reduction of berths. We can still offer some spaces to those who are interested.

-         One way from Holland to the Lakes (usually Cleveland) for approx. $1500 U.S.

NOTE: This is our least predictable product. It is partially tramp and ports and itineraries can change even after sailing. You could be asked to change ships to complete your journey. You might not know sailing dates until a few days prior. We request space by the half-month – early June or late September, for example. These are “mystery” voyages. Port times can be longer due to general cargo and the uncertainty of the itinerary can be fun. Do not even consider this product if you have time constraints!

Feel free to inquire about other itineraries including Australia, New Zealand, South America, Far East, South Pacific and even a wonderful around the world voyage.

Passengers must provide a valid passport, medical certificate from your doctor, proof of out-of-country hospital/medical insurance including emergency evacuation (sometimes called air ambulance) coverage and, in some cases, visas (China, Brazil and Australia for example).

For more information and a check on availability and other possibilities, please supply birthdates, citizenship of passport and final destination as well as desired month of sailing.

New Solstice on the Books for Celebrity

Celebrity Cruises has ordered a fifth big cruise liner from MEYER WERFT in Papenburg, Germany. The previous contracts for four ships of the Solstice class are now followed by a pre-contract for the construction of a fifth cruise ship.

Delivery of the fifth ship is scheduled for the autumn of 2012. The first ship of this class, Celebrity Solstice, will be delivered this autumn. The other ships will follow at one-year intervals each.

The 122,000-gt ships for Celebrity Cruises will have a length overall of 315 m and a breadth of 36.8 m. 2,850 passengers will be accommodated in 1,425 cabins. All standard cabins will offer more space than is usual for this type. More than 90% of all cabins are outside, 90% of which have their own balconies. Other architectural highlights of the new ship will be the “Lawn Club” featuring natural grass, the “Corning Museum of Glass” where the art of glassblowing is presented, and a couple of different restaurants.

“We really appreciate that we will build one more of these innovative cruise ships for Celebrity Cruises” says Bernard Meyer. “This type of ship features extremely energy-efficient and eco-friendly systems.”

MEYER WERFT has already built five cruise ships for Celebrity Cruises starting with Horizon in the early and mid-1990s. It also converted Galileo into Meridian for the Chandris family.

Smallest New Ship for Alaska

With all the cruise ships plying Alaska waters this summer, the newest one may well be the smallest. American Safari Cruises’ new luxury yacht, the 36-passenger, 145-foot Safari Explorer, will make her first Alaska port call May 30 in Juneau for the start of her eight-day, seven-night roundtrip cruises from the Alaska capital.

Now undergoing a multi-million-dollar renovation in Seattle,
Safari Explorer is the cruise line’s fourth luxury yacht and offers an
active spa environment with a licensed masseuse for complimentary
massages, yoga classes, a dedicated fitness area, on-deck hot tub and
sauna. “The ‘real’ spa is the natural one, of course, the great Alaska
narrow waterways and islands for kayaking and guided hiking,” says Tim
Jacox, vice president of sales and marketing.

Other  features include two large suites with Jacuzzi tubs
and balconies, some triple accommodations and all outside or
above-deck cabins. Like other American Safari Cruises vessels, the
new yacht carries double sea kayaks and motorized shore boats for
close-up exploration of the Alaska wilderness.

Safari Explorer
will cruise from Juneau May 30 through Sept. 5.
The itinerary focuses on wildlife – whales, sea lions, bears – and
glaciers, including up to two days in Glacier Bay National Park and a
full day hugging the fjord walls of Endicott Arm to view the rarely
visited Dawes Glacier. Following the Alaska season, the yacht will
debut in Hawaii with inter-island itineraries in the waters less
travelled.

“Our cruises are built on spontaneity,” Mr,Jacox says, “and because our
itineraries are flexible, we can always follow the wildlife without
worrying about sticking to a rigid schedule to the next port.”

In addition to kayaking, Alaska passengers hike in the Tongass National
Forest and visit the tiny picturesque village of Elfin Cove and the
small Norwegian fishing port of Petersburg. The yacht travels only
during the day, spending the nights at anchor in small coves and bays
or quaint harbours.

The crew includes two professional naturalists, plus a park ranger in
Glacier Bay, and has a guest-crew ratio of two to one. The inclusive
cruises feature complimentary fine wines, premium spirits and
exceptional cuisine served at a single seating.

HSH PRINCE ALBERT II for Silversea

Inaugural Schedule Features Polar Expeditions

Silversea Cruises advises its new expedition ship (originally acquired as World Discoverer) will be renamed HSH Prince Albert II, in tribute to Prince Albert of Monaco.

The name is fitting for a ship that will be dedicated to the exploration and conservation of the planet’s oceans, wildlife and indigenous cultures.  The Principality of Monaco, aside from being the world’s capital of wealth and luxury — and home to Silversea’s global headquarters — has long been recognized as a leader in marine environment research.  Prince Albert I, a pioneer in oceanographic science and exploration, first explored the Arctic’s Svalbard archipelago in the early part of the last century, later founding what would become the world renowned Oceanographic Institute. In 2006, Prince Albert II plotted a similar course on part of his journey to the North Pole, hoping to add to the scientific body of work started by his ancestor — and to draw attention to the effects of global warming on the Arctic regions.  As a result, the prince is the first incumbent head of state to have reached the northern most point on Earth.

“We are deeply honoured to have our new expedition ship named after His Serene Highness Albert II, Sovereign Prince of Monaco” said Manfredi Lefebvre, Silversea’s chairman.  “His passion for environmental conservation is well known and we are committed to supporting his mission by offering travellers the chance to discover and appreciate some of the world’s most remote and unspoiled regions.”

When Silversea’s adventure ship sets sail in June 12, following a naming ceremony in Monte Carlo, it will herald the beginning of a new mode in exploration cruising — where a luxurious ambiance is just as important as the eye-opening educational experiences it will deliver.

The Lloyd’s register A1A ice-rated vessel is purpose-built for expedition cruising and is currently undergoing an extensive multimillion-dollar renovation at the Fincantieri shipyard in Trieste, Italy.  To ensure the ship will deliver an expedition cruise experience consistent with Silversea’s award-winning luxury standards, the refurbishment will include exterior design modifications, state-of-the-art technological enhancements and a comprehensive upgrade of all passenger  accommodations and public spaces.

The ship is also being outfitted with a new fleet of eight, latest-model Zodiacs with Yamaha four-stroke engines (for lowest possible emissions) that will allow travellers to enjoy up-close exploration and access to some of the world’s most remote landscapes.

“The interest in expedition travel is definitely on the rise, both among affluent baby boomers and seasoned travellers wanting to further enrich their already wide knowledge of more traditional and established destinations. Silversea’s HSH Prince Albert II will be the perfect option for those adventure-seekers who prefer to travel adding to a genuine expedition product the comforts of a true luxury product” said Amerigo Perasso, Silversea president.  “Adventure travel is also about having experiences that are intellectually enriching, so every voyage will feature a carefully selected expedition team of lecturers and leading experts who will share their insights on the natural, cultural and historical highlights of some of the most pristine and secluded regions on Earth.”

In a related development, the company has announced the appointment of Conrad Combrink as Silversea director of expeditions, with responsibility for developing the ship’s itinerary and programmes.  He will also oversee the recruitment of expedition staff and lecturers.  Mr. Combrink’s career of over ten years in expedition cruising includes serving as expedition leader in World Discoverer.

EXPLORING THE EARTH:  TOP TO BOTTOM

Silversea’s expedition ship will set sail June 12 from London on an Inaugural Season of voyages of 10 to 21 days focusing on polar adventures.  Sailing first to the Arctic Circle, Svalbard, Iceland and Greenland for the summer, the ship will then reposition to South America and Antarctica for autumn and winter voyages.  From mid August to November 2008, HSH Prince Albert II will journey from the east coast of North America through the Panama Canal to Los Angeles before heading south to Ushuaia. Along this special repositioning route are opportunities to explore the Sea of Cortez (with an extension to Copper Canyon), the Galapagos, Falklands and South Georgia Island.  Pricing starts at US$3,867 per person, double occupancy, and includes shore excursions as well as Silversea’s signature all-inclusive amenities.
After the ship’s refit, the ice-class vessel will accommodate just 132 passengers in 66 ocean-view suites, many featuring private verandas.  With cabins and suites ranging from 180 to over 600 square feet, she will provide some of the largest accommodations of any expedition ship.  18 suites will each feature more than 400 square feet of luxury.

Travellers will also enjoy many amenities found on larger ships, such as an elegant single-seating main dining room, library (with computers and Internet access), boutique, beauty salon, fitness centre, full-service spa and two Jacuzzi pools.  The ship will also feature several lounges for enjoying drinks, music and entertainment, including a cigar lounge like the Humidor on the line’s other ships.

HSH Prince Albert II will also be equipped with state-of-the-art satellite communication systems, providing bow-to-stern wireless Internet access, enabling passengers with Wi-Fi-enabled laptops and PDAs to surf the Internet and check e-mails from the comfort of their suites as well as public areas.  Cellular phone service will also allow guests to stay in touch using their own cell phones even when the ship is miles away from land.  The vessel will also feature flat screen TVs in all suites and cabins.  In the ship’s lounges, the latest audio-visual equipment, complete with high-definition video screens, will display live lectures hosted by visiting destination experts.

Guests aboard Silversea’s HSH Prince Albert II will be inspired by the varied and constantly adapted itineraries that will make the most of the natural opportunities created by the landscapes around them.  There is so much to explore that they can sail for up to 48 days on back-to-back voyages without repeating a Zodiac landing site.  This is not soft adventure; this is full scale exploring from an ultra-luxury base at sea, in true Silversea style.

Reservations are set to go on sale starting Friday, February 29, 2008.

Azamra and Celebrity Join Princess in Allowing Shipboard Weddings

logocel.jpglogoprin.gif

Passengers who wish to be married at sea by captains of Azamara
Cruises’ and Celebrity Cruises’ ships will soon be able to “tie” their
own steadfast “knot” at sea, when the lines launch legal, captain-led
wedding ceremonies later this year to complement their existing vow
renewal and in-port wedding offerings.

“While many of our guests come onboard seeking a once-in-a-lifetime
wedding or vow renewal location, and we’ve been happy to provide them
with in- port weddings led by a local official, their number-one
request is for captains to perform the ceremony,” said Lisa
Lutoff-Perlo, Azamara Cruises and Celebrity Cruises Vice President of
Hotel Operations. “Now, we’re able to fullfil that wish, while sailing
the open waters of the world.”

Celebrity has long partnered with The Wedding Experience to offer
onboard vow renewals at sea and in-port wedding ceremonies, and with
the recent re-registration of seven of Celebrity’s eight ships in
Malta, where Azamara’s two ships also are registered, government
regulations have changed to allow for captains to perform legal
marriages while the ships sail the seas of the world.

Passengers being married at sea by Azamara and Celebrity captains will be
offered a variety of packages that include anything from private
receptions in their ship’s specialty restaurant to cake, champagne,
and more. Basic captain- performed wedding packages begin at US$2,500.
Passengers should book their wedding in advance of their sailing in order
to allow time for the processing of licenses and other legal documents.

Those who wish to take their love to new heights may also delight in
Celebrity’s unique offering on its cruisetours to Talkeetna Alaskan
Lodge and The Hotel Alyeska. There, travellers can be married or renew
their vows amidst the breathtaking hanging glaciers of the Girdwood
Valley, or with stunning views of Mt. McKinley as a backdrop. These
ceremonies can take place from June to September, as part of a
Celebrity Cruises pre- or post-voyage cruisetour.

Up to now only Princess, with its ships registered in Bermuda, was able to perform shipboard weddings, while at sea.
